Nellie finished getting ready by putting on her locket, added her calming charm in it and fluffed her hair. Her shift at the bookstore started in thirty minutes and since it was right down the road from her home she walked there. On her way, Nellie took in the sight of the leaves falling and the fresh cool air if Autumn. It's was a wonderful time of year. Amidst her daydreaming, something caught her eye. She looked over across the street and saw a glossy black hurst and people dressed in black. Her heart sank a bit. Death is a tragic thing no matter who it befalls to. The person being grieved, it seemed, was the last of a very old and wealthy family line, Donovan Parish. Nellie didn't know him but she heard stories and rumors. He was a very cruel man who disowned his sons after some falling out between them. Sure, kids don't always do what parents expect but Nellie thought it was a bit excessive. She decided to continue walking as to not stare and be thought of as nosey and as she started walking she saw two men who were about the age of the Parish sons. She thought it was good of them to show up for their father's funeral and then she entered the bookstore.

In the far corner of the store, Piper keeled in front one of the tall bookshelves that lined the walls. She skimmed the different titles sitting on the shelves, running her pointer finger across the spines of each book as she read the title softly to herself. Often she would stop on one, pull it off the shelf and skim though it. If it held her interest, she placed it off to the side where a tower of books have been forming. The latest book to join the pile was "Grimoire for the Green Witch: A Complete Book of Shadows." She pulled out a particularly thick book next and flipped it open. She could tell by the discoloration of the pages it was an older one. She could see some wear and tear along the bind, other than a few crease marks it was still in decent shape. She took a quick look around to see if anyone was around. When the cost was clear she brought it up to her face and smelled the pages. The slightly yellowish pages smelled delightfully old.
There was a ding as the front door to the store opened. The sudden noise made Piper jump and she quickly removed the book from her face. She peeked behind her and watched for a few seconds as the girl made her way across the store. Piper turned back to the bookshelf, Closed her book, and added it to the pile as she stood up straight. She scooped up her chosen books into her arms(taking a few seconds to juggle them around so they wouldn't fall) and relocated to another area of the small store.

Walking on to the back of the store, Nellie half-noticed a girl with a small mountain of books forming on the floor as she walked by the aisles. She smiled at how delightful it was someone was so excited about books. She wondered what books the girl was picking out.
The owner of the store greeted Nellie happily and gave her the things she needed to take over. "I have to go now. I need to go pay my respects to the Parish family," Mrs. Dawning informed her. "You know that the Parish sons that were disowned are here. I wonder if they are going to stay in town or leave. If they go, there won't be anymore Parishes and that will be a major hit for our community. The Parishes are one of the wealthiest families here and they help keep us up with the times." Nellie just listened. She wasn't much for gossip so she nodded and told Mrs. Dawning to send her condolences. The older lady said she would and soon was out the door. Nellie sighed and started to look through the newest set of books she was to put up. New as in new to the store. Their store was somewhat of a secondhand book store so there was rarely 'new' books. Nellie liked it that way. The fads and the ridiculous fans of the newest twilight series didn't bother them. It stayed pretty quiet in the store. Almost like a library.

The funeral procession across the street did not go unnoticed by the green eyed girl. However, if it wasn't for her father informing her of the Parish's passing she wouldn't have known who it was for. she didn't know much about the man other than he wasn't the nicest person out there. She tried not to judge others before meeting them herself, but she had heard stories about him. Despite that it was still sad that he passed. Losing a family member was never easy, no matter how horrible a person they might have been.
After adding a few more books to her stack, Piper made her way to the check out counter. She dumped her picks onto the counter top then dug into her small back pack for her wallet. The books she had placed not so neatly on the counter ranged from the history of witch craft to booklets on the different type of spells one could cast and the reason for them. She also had a few books focusing on spiritually, faeries and one or two nature identification guides. She greeted the other Burnett with a large and happy smile. "Hi there! You have a great store. Your selection was bigger than I imaged!"

Nellie was wiping down the counter and started on the cash register when the girl she saw collecting a stack of books unloaded her stack into the counter. Nellie smiled at the stack and thought this was an interesting young woman. She thought that more so when she started ringing them up and read the spines. "Oh, thank you," she replied. "It is a pretty nice store. I was lucky to have been hired here. It's a great place to work. The selection is pretty vast considering how small our store is. At least in this subject anyways ha. Do you study the craft?" She asked the last question with caution. She didn't want to pry but she was curious as she also studied it a bit herself.

"I think I'd be in trouble if I worked here. Every paycheck would probably go right back into the store! Haha." Piper replied as she rested her small, tie-dye back pack on the counter. As she rummaged through it to find her wallet, she continued speaking with a little more excitement in her tone of voice. "Yeah! I've been into it since I was little. My mom introduced me to it and it just kind of stuck with me." She was no expert on the subject. Despite years or researching, learning and practicing there was a lot she didn't know, but that was the fun of it. It was a constant journey that she was more than willing to take.
She let out a soft "yes" and pulled out a yellow bill fold wallet with an orange peace sign snitched onto the front of it. She turned her green eyes back to the other girl with a big smile. "I guess you could say it's almost a family thing. My dad dabbles in it a little bit too, but it's mainly me and my mom. I've pretty much gone through all her books on the subject and then some!"
